Carrigan vs. Leah/Stevens vs. McGill-MVWA 73 Report

JHQ Arena
Springfield, MO
Sunday July 10th, 2016

Over 6,800 people filed into the JHQ arena in Springfield, Missouri to watch last night’s MVWA 73 show. Two title matches sat at the top of the card but it was the opener that garnered a ton of interest due to the involvement of High Octane Wrestling, and former War Games teammates, Scott Stevens and Ray McAvay.

After winning War Games on a team of which Stevens captained and McAvay came away with the HOW World Title, things went south in a hurry at the next HOW show. McAvay faced off against the former champion Brian Hollywood and following an incident where McAvay inadvertently speared Stevens on the floor, Stevens later pulled the referee out of the ring when McAvay had a pinfall on Hollywood and cost him the match and the title. Stevens then piledrived McAvay several times on a steel chair after the match- setting up a week where a bitter war of words broke out between Stevens and McAvay which drew in their wives Lisa Barbosa-Stevens and MVW Executive Director Dawn McGill.

Dawn McGill

Stevens and McAvay had their showdown Friday night in Chicago where a clearly injured McAvay defeated Stevens in a wild match that both wives getting involved in a brawl outside the ring along with a fracas between McAvay’s Les Miserables and the HOW’s EPU on the floor.

Adding more fuel to the fire, Barbosa-Stevens, who’d been tagging with McGill’s sister Regina at MVW, turned on her at a special Fourth of July show and hit her with a Toxic Sting before walking out on a match against the Bayless Twins. This set up the match at MVWA 73.

Lisa Barbosa-Stevens Promo
With her husband Scott Stevens standing with her, Lisa cut a promo in the ring before the match and said tonight was all about ‘family honor.’ She felt both Dawn and Ray McAvay disrespected not just Scott Stevens but the entire Stevens wrestling family and in a few minutes she intends to put things right. No matter what the circumstances, Barbosa-Stevens says she won’t put up with anyone tarnishing the Stevens wrestling legacy. Tonight, Regina McGill is going to be taught a wrestling lesson she’ll never forget.

Paige McGillicutty

Regina McGill Interview
Backstage, Regina McGill has her response as she talks with Paige McGillicutty.   She tells Paige the worst part about what Lisa did the other night is she was brought in to be a role model, to show the younger wrestlers how to conduct business. Regina says Lisa turned on her just like her husband turned on Ray McAvay. She says Lisa’s cutting corners to get ahead. Taking the easy way. Regina says she’s worked hard to get where she is and if Lisa is going to win- she’s going to have to earn it the hard way.

Regina then came to the ring accompanied by her sister and MVW Executive Director Dawn McGill. This set up an interesting scenario with Stevens and McGill, both showing the bumps and bruises from everything that went down Friday night, being in close proximity two nights after a highly charged match between him and her wife.

Would there be more fireworks in the match?

Match 1: Lisa Barbosa-Stevens (with Scott Stevens) vs. Regina McGill (with Dawn McGill)

Regina McGill
AGE: 27 / HT: 5′ 7″ WT: 136 / HOME: Kalamazoo, MI / FIN: Pepsi Plunge

Lisa Barbosa-Stevens
AGE: 30 / HT 6’0″ WT: 130 / HOME: Houston, TX / FIN: Toxic Sting

Regina is a brawler. Lisa Barbosa-Stevens is a ring technician and also has a strength advantage.

With Scott Stevens and Dawn McGill eyeing each other warily, and referee Davey Keels warning both to stay out of the ring, Keels calls for the bell and both Barbosa-Stevens and McGill slowly circle in the ring. Lisa with a go behind. Regina uses her legs to push Barbosa-Stevens to the corner and breaks the hold. Lisa locks in a side headlock. Whip to the ropes, and Barbosa-Stevens hits a shoulder tackle. McGill back up quickly and walks into an arm drag followed a body slam. Barbosa-Stevens lays in the chops and drives McGill into the ropes. Regina fires back with a kick to the chest, but Lisa ducks a right and clotheslines Regina to the outside. Immediately, Dawn McGill starts to walk around the ring apron, keeping her eye on Scott Stevens. Stevens holds up his hands and does not advance. Barbosa-Stevens then dives over the top rope and spears Regina. She sends McGill to the barricade and the impact bends her over the steel. Side Russian Leg Sweep into the barricade by Lisa. Keels wastes no time in starting a ten count. Regina fight back and reverses, dropping Barbosa-Stevens on the barricade, then whipping her into the timekeepers table.

Regina gets back to the ring to break the count. But she waits for Barbosa-Stevens who takes an extra few seconds to gather herself before climbing back in. She immediately dropkicks Regina’s knee and it buckles. Barbosa-Stevens kicks the knee a second time, taking McGill off her feet. Barbosa-Stevens then stomps at the knee further. Regina tries to roll out but instead Barbosa-Stevens rolls her up for 1…2…NO! Regina gets her shoulder up. Barbosa-Stevens drags her back to her feet but Regina connects with a chop, another, one more. But she misses a dropkick and Barbosa-Stevens locks in a Figure Four real quick! Dawn McGill climbs up on the corner turnbuckle and shouts at Regina to get to the ropes. Scott Stevens also jumps up on the turnbuckle and eyes Dawn to make sure she doesn’t intervene.   Regina gets to the ropes and Keels calls for the break.

Barbosa-Stevens again goes to the knee and kicks McGill off her feet. Regina rolls out of the ring and confers with her sister. Lisa backs up to her corner and gets some counsel from her husband. Regina comes back in and throws a couple rights. She goes for a neckbreaker but Barbosa-Stevens escapes and hits a running clothesline. Lisa bounces off the ropes and drives a hard forearm into Regina’s chest. Barbosa-Stevens sits Regina on the top rope and hits a superplex. She holds on…1…2…Regina kicks out and comes back with a right hand and a headbutt. Regina then goes top rope, flies, and runs into Barbosa-Stevens boot! Lisa goes for the Toxic Sting, McGill counters and goes for the Pepsi Plunge but Barbosa-Stevens rolls her up! Pin for 1…2..NO! Regina with a right, Barbosa-Stevens bounces off the ropes and ducks under a clothesline! Full Nelson…Regina slips out, goes for a surprise rollup…1…2…NO! Barbosa-Stevens kicks out. Regina with a right hand- but Lisa ducks…kick to the midsection…TOXIC STING! Dawn McGill instinctively jumps up on the corner turnbuckle again. Scott Stevens jumps up on the corner turnbuckle. They make eye contact but both do not advance any further.  Lisa with the roll up…1…2…3.

Keels calls for the bell and that’s all.

WINNER: Lisa Barbosa-Stevens @ 14:34

Keels raises Lisa’s hand in victory and Scott Stevens enters the ring to congratulate his wife. Dawn McGill also climbs into the ring to check on her sister.

Again, there’s a stare down between the two and a few tense seconds follow. But cooler heads prevail and in the end, the McGills go their way and the Stevens follow suit.

Dawn McGill Talks Lisa Barbosa-Stevens and MVW Syndication
Once backstage, Dawn McGill talks with Paige McGillicutty about the match. Dawn gives Lisa Barbosa-Stevens full credit for her win over Regina McGill.   Notes that despite her issues with Scott Stevens, she still feels strongly that bringing her into Missouri Valley Wrestling was a great move for the company.

McGill then talks about the work being done behind the scenes to secure a new syndicated television agreement. Dawn states that she is still talking to a couple different broadcast companies but still believes that MVW will be back on television by September.

Phil Feinbaum- Sports Entertainment Consortium Promo
Next out came the leader of the Sports Entertainment Consortium Phil Feinbaum. Feinbaum starts as he always does by proclaiming that his faction (the SEC) is better than ‘your faction.’ Phil talks about the SEC’s Brandi and Wendi Bayless putting their MVW Tag Team titles on the line tonight against the two time tag champions the Korver Sisters. While Feinbaum grudgingly acknowledges the Korver’s past title wins, he is not happy that people are disrespecting the SEC and its growing MVW legacy. Feinbaum tells the crowd that the Korvers are ‘good’ as in Boise State good. The Bayless Twins and the SEC are elite and that’s going to be the difference in the match.

The Korver Sisters Talk with Paige
Paige McGillicutty then talks with Kelly and Korey Korver backstage. Korey tells Paige the Korvers aren’t afraid of the SEC.   She calls Feinbaum’s assessment of them completely condescending and warns him that the Korvers may have had a dip in form over the past few months, but they’ve worked hard to get back to the level of excellence that won them two MVW Tag titles. Kelly jumps in and says the Bayless Twins haven’t seen the Korvers at their best- when they are the most technically proficient tag team in Missouri Valley Wrestling.

And with that…

Brandi tries to take the offense but Kelly shows good counter wrestling until Brandi is able to whip her into the ropes and take her down with the shoulder block. Brandi laid in some chops in the corner but Kelly leans back and tags Korey Korver in. Before she leaves, Kelly hits a head scissors and Korey cuts her down with a lariat. Brandi bails to the floor and talks things over with Phil Feinbaum.  Korey over to the SEC corner and she yells at Brandi to get back in the ring. MVW TV Champion Prisoner #034291 reaches us and grabs Korey by the throat. Then she brings her down and Korey slingshots back off the top rope on her back. Brandi climbs back in long enough to tag in Wendi.

Korey rolls back to her corner and tags Kelly back in. Wendi charges forward. Kelly trips her up and dumps her face first to the mat. Kelly whips her into the corner turnbuckle. Wendi staggers forward and gets caught with a jawbreaker by Kelly. Kelly goes up top but she’s cut off by Brandi Bayless so she goes with option 2- a victory roll for a pinfall…1…2…Wendi gets the shoulder up. Wendi whiffs on a jump kick and Korey pushes her in the corner. Korey hits a running bulldog and locks in the koji clutch. Wendi gets the ropes thanks to assistance from Brandi. Brandi tries to slip in- referee Ron Martin kicks her out as she is not the legal person in the ring. Korey slapped Brandi repeatedly and drug her back to the Korver corner. Kelly tags in. Brandi pokes the eyes and tries to get away. Kelly slams her to the mat by her hair and then hit the leg drop.

Kelly locks Brandi in an abdominal stretch while the other Bayless Twin screamed at her to tag out. Brandi somehow reaches the ropes. Kelly tags in Korey and takes a side headlock on Brandi just as she was going to tag out. Brandi reverses and again moves towards her corner. Korey reverses back and then got a sleeper. Brandi with a head butt to escape but walks straight into a superkick. Korey hooks the legs…1…2…3-NO. Brandi grabs the bottom rope just in the nick of time. Body slam by Korey then forearms. Korey lifts Brandi up into a fisherman’s buster and covers…1…2…Wendi makes the save. Now Kelly in as well and all four women brawled. Korey gets pulled out of the ring by Prisoner #034291 and gets mugged on the outside by Daisy Cutter-Bomb. Kelly is all alone with the Bayless Twins and ends up being set up for the Total Makeover. Wendi goes low. Brandi whips around with a spinning kick and sends Kelly face first to the mat. Brandi hooks the legs but Ron Martin does not count because Kelly is NOT the legal woman in the ring.

Where’s Korey? She’s getting Daisy Cutter Powerbombed through a table Prisoner #034291 has set up at Phil Feinbaum’s direction. Martin sees it and calls for the bell.

WINNER VIA DQ: The Korver Sisters @ 21:26

But the Bayless Twins still retain the title. Now it’s a full on four on two beatdown until…

The crowd roars as Angels of Death (Angel Scott/Angel Casey)- the former FOUR time MVW Tag Team champions- race down to the ring.

“Queen Cool” Leah Iris Interview
Backstage, Paige McGillicutty interviews ‘Queen Cool’ Leah Iris. Iris says she should be happy that she’s getting another shot at the MVW Title. She’s been wanting this moment ever since MVW reopened last year. To Leah, this is a dream match between two wrestlers who weren’t around in MVW’s first incarnation. She remembers beating former champion Jill Berg last year and it should have been the best moment ever. But due to the fact that Berg couldn’t make it to the ring and was counted out- it just didn’t go down the way she dreamt it would. Tonight, she grabs her dream and takes home the title.

Next up is a video vignette featuring the MVW Champion ‘Canadian Cyborg’ Sheline Carrigan. The night she won the MVW title is shown along with highlights from her title defenses.

Then it’s time for the big match. And of course, Leah’s ring entrance.

[The crowd explodes as Leah Iris appears in the back holding her fist in the air. She has black horn-rimmed glasses just like Donnie Iris and wears an AC/DC t-shirt and shorts.  She bobs her head to the beat of the song and starts down the aisle and slapping everyone’s hands on the way.]

And speaking of ring entrance’s…

[The lights go down inside the arena.]

[The crowd roars as a video screen shows the scene just outside a dressing room in the back. A police escort is waiting at the door. One of the policemen knocks on the door.]

Policeman: Ms. Berg. It’s time.

[The door opens and four large male bodybuilding types walk out of the dressing room surrounding a petite woman and her male assistant in the middle. The woman is busy talking on her cell phone while the man furiously scribbles down notes as the group makes their way towards the ring.]

[The crowd rises to their feet when the procession emerges from the back and starts their way down the ramp. Her assistant has a microphone and a portable tape recorder. He flips it on.]

[The group then continues towards the ring leaving the police escort behind.]

[The bodyguards assist Ms. Berg into the ring. She, her assistant, and two bodyguards immediately go to a corner and ignore Mr. McMann.]

[Berg continues to talk on her cell phone.]

[Finally she puts her phone away and takes a microphone from her assistant.]

Jill Berg then introduces the MVW Champion- the Canadian Cyborg…Sheline Carrigan.

As referee Davey Keels gives both women their final instructions, one Lisa Barbosa-Stevens sneaks out to the side of the stage to watch.

The bell rings and Carrigan immediately drives Iris into the corner. Keels calls for the break and Sheline steps back. Lockup again, and this time Carrigan pushes Iris into the other corner. Sheline unloads a bunch of rights in the corner and drops Iris to a knee. Queen Cool escapes but eats a clothesline Carrigan who then runs the ropes and sends Iris back down with a shoulder tackle. Big body slam to Iris. Leah again gets up and runs into Carrigan’s boot. Cover…1…2…Iris kicks out.

The champion keeps on the offensive. She hits a spinning elbow and covers…1..2..NO! Carrigan with a body slam and hits the ropes to drop an elbow. Then another. Cover…1…2..NO! Carrigan nails Iris with a huge right hand, knocking her on her ass. Iris eats a dropkick and a shoulder tackle. Whip into the corner, Sheline charges forward and hits the big splash. Jill Berg urges her to finish the job. Body slam in the center of the ring by Sheline. Carrigan pulls Iris up…puts her head between her knees…CANADIAN DESTROYER! Cover…1…2…3

WINNER AND STILL MVW CHAMPION: Sheline Carrigan @ 8:33

Jill Berg hits the ring and holds up Carrigan’s arm in victory.

From the stage, Lisa Barbosa-Stevens claps and then disappears to the back.
